NZSO: Maria Kliegel
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with special guest, cellist Maria Kliegel and conductor Alexander Shelley.
The performance will include works by: Ravel - Daphnis and Chloe Suites 1 and 2, Bloch - Schelomo, Bruch - Kol Nidrei and Messiaen - Les Offrandes Oubliées.
Maria Kliegel’s international career began when she won the Grand Prix of the Concours Rostropovich in 1981 in Paris. She is also one the best-selling cellists worldwide, and her recordings are always welcomed with enthusiasm.
Alexander Shelley was unanimously awarded first prize in the 2005 Leeds Conductors Competition. He was described in the press as “the most exciting and gifted young conductor to have taken this highly prestigious award. His conducting technique is immaculate, everything crystal clear and a tool to his inborn musicality.”
“Maria Kliegel plays the work with admirable confidence ...” "She throws herself into its three impassioned movements and revels in the music’s volatile moods while tossing off high-register hurdles without a trace of strain.” Classics Today.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 5.45pm with Jonathan Mane-Wheoki discussing the art of Daphnis and Chloé in Music.
